Pacific Rim Quilt Pattern – Free Tutorial and PDF

Quilting is an art form that connects tradition, creativity, and design, and the Pacific Rim Quilt Pattern is a beautiful example of this. Designed with rich fabrics and elegant geometric shapes, this quilt brings together harmonious colors and textures to create a striking finished piece. Whether you are an experienced quilter or just beginning your journey, this pattern offers both challenge and reward, resulting in a timeless quilt you will treasure.

The Pacific Rim design stands out for its precise strip sets, pieced squares, and stunning border technique. Inspired by Jinny Beyer’s fabric collection for RJR Fabrics, the quilt blends earthy tones with vibrant highlights, creating a balanced composition that feels both modern and classic. Its finished size of approximately 60 ¾” x 60 ¾” makes it ideal for displaying as a wall hanging, using as a decorative throw, or even gifting to someone special.

This quilt is especially rewarding because of the careful piecing process. Each section is built with accuracy, from sewing the A squares into rows to creating perfectly mitered borders. The pattern also incorporates Jinny Beyer’s famous border print framing technique, giving the final quilt a polished, professional look.

Step-by-Step Highlights

  1. Pieced Squares – Begin by sewing the A squares into rows and pressing in alternating directions. This forms the foundation of the quilt’s central square.

  2. Strip Sets – Using fabrics labeled B and C, sew strip sets with precise staggering (2 ¼” shifts), then cut into 3” wide strips. These are pieced into rectangular units.

  3. Assembling Units – The rectangular shapes are sewn around the central square in a counterclockwise direction, stopping and pressing carefully for accuracy.

  4. Borders – The quilt’s most distinctive feature is its mitered border. Using Jinny Beyer’s “Framing a Square with a Border Print” technique, borders are cut and sewn to align motifs seamlessly, producing a professional finish.

  5. Finishing – Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, baste, and quilt as desired. Finally, trim the edges and bind with matching strips.
