Materials Overview

According to the cutting chart (page 2), this quilt uses a mix of solids and bold novelty prints.

You will need:

  • Background and contrast fabrics for HST units

  • Feature prints in gold, black, and neutral tones

  • Border fabric

  • Binding strips (2 ¼” wide)

  • Backing: approximately 8 ¾ yards

  • Batting: 98” x 98”

Because this quilt is large, accurate cutting and consistent seam allowances are essential.

Fabrics

Construction Overview

1. Half-Square Triangle Units (HSTs)

The foundation of this quilt is the AB Half-Square Triangle units.

  • 3 ½” squares are cut and sewn diagonally

  • Trimmed down to 3” units

  • Rotated carefully to create directional movement

From these HSTs, two larger units are constructed:

  • HST Unit 1 (made in sets of 36)

  • HST Unit 2 (made in sets of 36)

Proper rotation of triangles is crucial to achieving the “track” effect seen in the final quilt layout.

2. Block Construction

There are two main block variations:

Block One

  • Combines F HST units and CE units

  • Squared to 12 ½”

  • Creates a bold diagonal split with strong contrast

Block Two

  • Assembled similarly but with alternate fabric placement

  • Adds variation and balance across the quilt

A total of:

  • 16 Block One units

  • 20 Block Two units

3. Sashing Strips

Sashing strips are created using alternating 2” squares and 2” x 12 ½” strips.

  • AI Sashing Strips (5 total)

  • CI Sashing Strips (2 total)

These strips separate the rows and maintain the bold grid structure of the quilt.

Quilt Assembly

The quilt is assembled in seven rows, carefully rotating blocks to create movement across the design.

After rows are sewn together:

  1. Add the AI and CI sashing strips.

  2. Sew rows together to complete the quilt center.

  3. Add the outer E border:

    • Cut two strips at 83” for the sides

    • Cut two strips at 90” for top and bottom

The finished quilt top measures approximately 90” x 90”.

Finishing

To complete the quilt:

  1. Layer quilt top, batting, and backing.

  2. Baste securely.

  3. Quilt as desired—straight-line quilting enhances the geometric look.

  4. Bind using 2 ¼” strips.
